One of our core experiences, Ecosystem Exploration is an all-inclusive guided expedition by canoe and on foot with time for fire building and campfire cooking, shelter building, orienteering, Pioneer-era games, and of course exploration of the many ecosystems found on Kimball’s 101 acre campus. The various components of the experience can be adjusted according to the group’s preferences.
High Adventure and Team Building
This extended block offers the best of the personal challenges of high ropes and climbing and the team building components of the giant swing and ground challenge course. Participants take a break midway through adventure activities to share a delicious meal.
S.T.E.M. Short Block Activities
All activities are formatted with a short video introduction (which itself models an appropriate usage of technology) followed by a practical, hands on application of the subject being introduced. All of the STEM subjects are closely related and sometimes intertwined, and our classes are structured and facilitated to embrace that reality. For example, discussion during the Technology block may include references to Science, Math and Engineering, and so on.
Ranging from team building activities to individual challenges to active games and everything in between, these are short activities of 5 minutes to an hour that allow instructors to facilitate a fun, low stress activity in their area of expertise.
Campfire with S’mores
A Kimball spin on the classic camping experience, campfires provide a space to indulge in a delicious marshmallowy treat as instructors provide entertainment through skits, songs and stories.
With the help of discussion and journaling prompts, participants take a moment to slow down, reflect on and process their day.
Participants will learn how to create a homemade pizza dough from scratch and have the chance to top it to their liking and watch it bake to perfection in just one minute in an authentic wood-fired pizza oven.
With access to Gaga Ball, High Adventure activities, the waterfront, basketball courts and field games, indoor play areas, and more as is appropriate to the season and group size, participants will have the opportunity to choose their own adventure or simply relax. Not all activities will be available at all times.
A calm, quiet experience under the stars will allow participants to experience the peace of nighttime in small, guided groups while learning about photoluminescence, lesser-known capabilities of human ears and eyes, and more.
Participants will hike by torchlight throughout the various trails and ecosystems around campus.
In this updated take on a perennial favorite, participants break into small groups and use found objects to create an ingenious egg-protecting contraption. Their ingenuity will be put to the test when an instructor drops both the contraption and egg from the top of our forty foot climbing wall, Goliath. Surviving eggs will be tossed increasingly long distances by representatives from finalist teams until a winner is determined.
